Under the Order-in-Council of 15th January 1842, it was ordered that the law of England "so far as it relates to the purchase or the other acquisition or to the holding by Aliens of lands, tenements or hereditaments situate within the Realm of England, shall be applied and the same is hereby declared to be applicable to the purchase, acquisition or holding by

Aliens, within the Island of Mauritius and its Dependencies, of land, buildings or other immoveable property situate within the said Island or its

Dependencies."

No later legislation

appears to have qualified this..

Ordinance No.34 of 1939 controls immi- gration and" immigrant" includes anyone who has resided in the Colony for less than seven years. However, apart from certain precautionary powers to prevent the entry of criminals and destitutes and to deal with those who become destitute after entry, there is nothing in this Ordinance to detract from free- dom of movement or residence within the Colony.
